One of the pleasures of summertime is swimming. Women who enjoy this form of recreation look for a new swimsuit in the latest fashion each year. One of the fashion lines they look at is the Betsey Johnson bathing suits line.

Swimwear has been around since the Greeks many years ago and, believe it or not, started out as a bikini. There followed a period where swimming was discouraged in favor of water sports but then came back into vogue. The type of swimwear has changed drastically over the years but has, once again, come back to this ancient custom of the bikini.

It was not until the 18th century that swimming was brought into fashion, in England and France, and even then it was on a sporadic basis. When it became more regular, the men and women were segregated at the beach with the women on one side and the men on the other. Swimming, as is known today, was unheard as, at that time, people took a quick dip and got out of the water.

It was not until the 1800's that regular swimming was recognized and swimwear changed from the previous heavy and awkward beach wear that had to have the tops weighted down to have them remain in place. The beaches became a popular place for recreation and serious swimming. The original suits were gradually changed as time progressed.

For many years modesty dictated the swimwear styles. A woman's body had to be completely concealed with suits that were like dresses with bloomers. In addition, many required ribbed stockings to cover the legs. Most women had a hat, with an elastic band on their head, as well and, colors were pretty much the same.

The past few years have seen a deluge of different types of bikinis that conceal little of a woman's body. However, new on the market, with these suits, is the mini-skirt which replaces the traditional bottom. This addition has become very popular with beach goers and people who swim elsewhere. They have found that this addition gives an entirely different appearance to the overall look. In addition, many of this type of swimsuit has new color combinations and other additions that make them stand out from the original plain ones that appeared in the marketplace.

Designers who work with bathing suits must be conscious of not only what will be attractive but what will adapt to the many different shapes that will be wearing them. They must be able to allow for the swimmer's movements as well as being in attractive colors and designs. Being apple to apply these requirements is what makes a good bathing suit.
