Similar to fridge freezers in the UK and the rest of Europe, American fridge freezers have a freezer and fridge compartments but unlike these traditional UK appliances their compartments are situated side by side and not one on top of the other.

The American style fridge freezers are wider but usually just as tall as the traditional models so store much more food. So if your family is large then an American fridge freezer will get rid of the need for a separate chest freezer.

One of the great benefits of these appliances is that you can see all the food that's contained inside, unlike a chest freezer where you will need to go rooting for the items at the bottom. While food might be easier to locate, large food items such a big pizza's might not fit flat on the shelf so if you're a bit of a pizza monster make sure you know how large your favourite pizza box is so before you buy you can make sure it fits inside. Generally American fridge freezers have 2 doors but there are a few larger models with 3 or even 4 doors.

AS unlikely as it seems there have been many technological advances during the last half of the century. Many models have LCD displays and electronic controls for temperature on the outside of the fridge so they can be checked and corrected quickly. Newer models have the option of fast freezing so food can be frozen quickly, locking in its taste and helping it keep its temperature. Many of these styles are designed to keep food frozen and chilled in the event of a power cut, so if you're area experiences these often, this would be an excellent feature to have.

American style fridge freezers have many features some are also available in traditional types of appliances such as adjustable shelves so you can accommodate larger items. Some models come with an automatic defrost button or switch so it will do the annoying job of defrosting the freezer for you. Others will have frost free technology. In my experience while frost free doesn't really mean frost free in the long run it will reduce the need to defrost the freezer considerably.

They have glass shelves, door balconies to store bottles, interior lights, egg racks and salad crispers just like a traditional fridge but they also have extras. Such as LCD displays and some have ice or and water dispensers. American fridge freezer have grown in popularity in the UK over the years and because of the growing demand for them, many companies such as LG and Samsung have a good choice of them. Before you choice one check that you will need or use all the features that come with the top models, make sure it will fit in your kitchen and check that the plug will reach the plug socket.

American style fridge freezers are more expensive than slimmer combos so decide whether you're happy to spend that amount of money and look online to grab good deals.
