An Overview Of Forensic Accounting by Jeremy Winters
in Business (submitted 2012-01-15)
Forensic accounting is a branch of accounting which deals with solving mysteries relating to finance and unearthing crimes related to manipulating the books. The field has become very popular in recent years, thanks to the image that forensic professionals get in the media and films. Most of the people in the field of forensic science are responsible for helping law enforcement find a criminal. The job of this type of accountant is not exactly the same but it is definitely along the same lines.
These accountants are not only expected to have a strong base in accounting but they also should be aware of the latest tools in science and technology to unearth account manipulation. However, even forensic accountants have to go through normal paperwork just like any other accountant would and they must undertake meticulous analysis and arrive at a conclusion based on what they have discovered.
Most people relate the word "forensic" with exciting law enforcement work and the journey to unravel the truth. However, this is not necessarily how it works in real life and it can be as mundane as any other job. These accountants need to make a meticulous examination of accounts. In fact, people who aspire to be part of this industry are advised to have some exposure in basic law enforcement and other legal aspects.
The basic objective of any forensic accounting course is to train and teach the students to do things with the highest level of accuracy. There is no room for adjustments or complacency here. And this is the same attribute that the students are required to adopt while examining a company's books. The methods made use of are accurate in nature and the findings therefore need to be as precise as possible.
Unlike most other accounting classes where students are expected to learn the basic practices of accounting, forensic accounting teaches its students to not only learn the rules of accounting but also to investigate to find out how the numbers are arrived at. The field combines an investigatory approach along with dispute resolution and litigation support tactics.
People in the forensic accounting field are usually involved in solving family disputes between two parties. If the accountants are not able to solve the issue, then it is necessary to thoroughly examine the accounts. Most of the times when such domestic disputes are taken to the court, forensic accountants serve as prime witnesses as they have studied the case and know the in and outs of the accounts more than anyone else other than the parties involved directly.
