Dentistry And Disease Prevention    by Dentists

Dentists, studies show, can play a very important role the prevention of long-term diseases. In addition to looking at a patient's health history, they can do things like take blood pressure readings and examine x-rays. They can clinically observe a patient's risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and other conditions. There are also studies giving reason to believe that a sizable number of Americans see a dentist more often than they see a physician or GP. In addition, the number of Americans who routinely see a dentist but never a general physician was nearly 20 million. While 26 percent of the children surveyed reported to not seeing a GP for basic checkups, one-third of that 26 million did at least regularly see a dentist. What we can take away from the survey, is that dentists are more valuable to a patient's whole health than they may be generally thought of as. A dentist may be a person's only hope of detecting the signs of many chronic conditions and diseases. A patient's dental professional may be the one best suited to recommend tests and further screening for a chronic illness based on various oral symptoms. And without the examination by a dentist, the patient might never get the appropriate follow-up care. The role of a dentist and a good dental team should not be undervalued in a person's overall total healthcare. Past studies reveal that overall, oral health is conducive to general health. Bacteria could enter a patient's bloodstream through the gums, leading to heart disease or other health problems. Dentists, by sealing cracks in the mouth and gums, could prevent problems like this. Plaque and build-up on teeth is also dangerous; a regular cleaning deals with this. The survey was not skewed by people being without health insurance. Eighty-five percent of the people surveyed had health insurance, and ninety-three percent of the children were covered. You should value your oral health. You don't ever want the health of your teeth and gums to fall into neglect. Think about what life would be without functioning, healthy teeth and gums to begin the digestive process. A healthy, confident smile is something that every person should be able to enjoy in life. Only a dentist has the expertise and technology to overcome oral health issues like accident trauma, pore hygiene, and genetics. A person is simply not going to have the quality of life he should when troubled with issues like extractions, oral infections, or cavities. Be knowledgeable about your own oral health; knowledge and prevention may save valuable teeth tissue later in life.
