Tomatoes are sensitive plants that require just enough of the essential nutrients for them to produce excellent fruits, but this does not mean that tomatoes are difficult to grow. Through the years, many expert gardeners had come up of different techniques in growing tomatoes for varying conditions. Many people are now considering to grow tomatoes in their own backyard because they can tell the difference when it comes to the taste and freshness. Tomatoes are considered as a fruit, but it is known as the most preferred vegetable for home gardening. Anyone can start growing tomatoes from seed, but for the first-time gardeners, it will be easy to use seedlings first. Beginners are usually excited to have their first harvest the soonest possible time. The use of seedlings or starter plants also ensures less error.

Just like any plants, growing tomatoes requires the basic four elements, which are soil, light, water and heat. Tomatoes became stunted when there is no enough sunlight, which should be at least six to eight hours a day. It will help to find a spot that allows excellent sun exposure during the morning, and provide enough shade during the time that the sun is at its highest peak. Growing tomatoes in pots is the best way when there is no perfect place, because the plant can be easily placed in different locations. In intensely cold places, planting tomatoes should be indoors where the temperature is warm, provided that there are fluorescent lights. The ideal temperatures for growing tomatoes are not less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and not more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

Growing tomatoes requires lots of water, but be sure to know the right interval and amount of water to avoid drowning the plant. Watering every other day is enough as long as the soil is always moistened. When watering, direct the water at the bottom part only, because watering the tomato plant from the top can expose it in different pests and diseases. When it comes to the soil, planting tomatoes prefers slightly acidic soil environment. There is a pH checker for the soil. The ideal acidity is 6.0 up to 6.8. If the pH is too low, it will help to spread lime, and when the pH is too high, sprinkling sulphur granules can lower it. Regular potting soil is just right, but there should be enough nutrients provided, which can be attained by mixing bagged manure and other organic matter as its fertilizer.
