Freeware is software for your computer which you can download completely free of charge. The term itself means free software. Freeware is easy to download, can be accessed as many times as you wish over an unlimited period of time, without the need for a license.

Freeware can include a wide range of different software including anything from gaming and work related programs to images and music. It is a fantastic Internet resource. Most people are extremely wary about the idea of downloading free software from the Internet because they are worried about the risk of viruses. This is a valid concern because it is true that whilst much of the freeware out there is completely safe, some freeware can contain viruses, threats and other types of malicious software.

To protect your computer you need to be aware of the potential risks and take the appropriate steps to avoid them, you cannot just start downloading anything which attracts you without checking it out first. If you are unsure, it would be wise to stick to the popular, large freeware sites. The reputable ones will have vetted their programs themselves by testing and checking them out for users, prior to sharing them.

Unfortunately however, not all sites posting software actually do this, some sites are more interested in quantity rather than quality. Many will list anything and everything they can get their hands on in order to boast that their collection is the biggest, so their size alone will certainly not guarantee their safety.

Finding the best freeware available can be a bit of a daunting task, particularly when you consider the fact that a Google search for freeware will return well over one hundred and fifty million pages of results. If you want to be an informed freeware consumer and err on the side of caution, a useful way to find out which sites are trustworthy and learn a little about their history is through forums. With a little research you should soon be able to learn which software people have had both good and bad experiences with, enabling you to learn by their mistakes and save yourself some time. The larger directories which allow users to leave feedback and rate their experience with software products are also very informative and useful.

Some of the freeware programs that are available are free because quite frankly they are completely diabolical and nobody would ever dream of actually paying to use them. Whilst others are quite handy to use for free, but are not quite useful enough to persuade individuals to actually go out and spend money on them.

Then there are the brilliant freeware programs that have been created by talented programmers who want to share their fantastic software with others. It is hard for most people to understand what would motivate a programmer to put their time and energy into a project only to release it free of charge. Essentially they usually hope to get some form of credit later on for masterminding something useful. Many programmers will also accept donations for their work, even though this is not a requirement. There is never an actual charge for its use.

Freeware is sometimes confused with Shareware. Shareware however is entirely different. With Shareware you can use software for a trial period free of charge, but must pay the programmer for the full version if you like it and wish to continue to use it.
