Whenever the average movie fan thinks of the film industry they think of Los Angeles, the city that has been the movie capital of the world for decades but over the last 10 years another movie country has been producing the most creative and innovative films and that country is Korea.

Since North Korea is still dominated by communism all of the movies filmed in Korea area filmed in South Korea. Korean movies have high production values, great scripts and excellent actors who always deliver A List performances.

Action Thrillers

One of the best actions thrillers filmed in South Korea over the last 10 years is Oldboy (filmed in 2003). It’s a story about a businessman named Oh Dae-Su who was kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years then released with money, fancy clothes, a cell phone and no explanation as to why he was kidnapped and imprisoned. As he tries to find out why he was kidnapped and imprisoned he ultimately learns the motivates of his tormentor.

Dark Comedies

If you’re a fan of dark comedies in the United States you will love the movie Barking Dogs Never Bite (filmed it 2000). It’s about a guy who has had enough with the barking dogs in his apartment building and decides to take matters into his own hands to silence them.

Another great Korean dark comedy is the quiet family (filmed in 1998). It’s about Tae-Gu Kang, a man who decides to buy a small hotel in a remote hiking area. He eventually moves his family into the hotel to manage it. Tae-Gu and his family start to wonder why nobody is coming to stay at the hotel when they finally get their first guest who ends up committing suicide. The family is worried that the police will never believe that their guest committed suicide and decides to bury the man’s body on their property to cover up his death.
