So, what is the change and how does it effect most of what you do online as relates to Google?
The latest change (which was announced today and takes effect March 1) involves a Google privacy policy simplification via a new master privacy policy and new terms of service. It was announced on the company blog. The intent is to relieve users of the complicated legal stuff and improving overall user experience. Currently, there are some 70 privacy documents across the various Google products.
Yes, I did say 70 different privacy documents.who's actually going to read all of them, especially if a few have slight differences?
But, what the new Google privacy policy change means with is Google can pull information from one service and deliver it to you using another one. So, it essentially brings all products together as one. Gmail with Google plus with Picasa with Chrome and so on among any other Google products you use.
As the user increases search customization, advertisers have the opportunity and possibility to reach a more targeted audience. Or, in the words of Google per the blog post "In short, we'll treat you as a single user across all our products, which will mean a simpler, more intuitive Google experience."
Now, the last change called Search Plus Your World, which included Google Plus results ahead of other social media platform result. It caused a bit of an uproar since many concluded that the search results with Google Plus consideration as a priority is biased.
Although this Google privacy policy change may not cause the same reaction, the result will more than likely mean added ad revenue for Google dressed in an "easier for the user" message. Even the new Google privacy policy video states that "over time, it will result in better search results and ads."
Google does emphasize that some things will not change which includes the continued promotion of data liberation and transparency. They still say they will never sell your information.
As far as the new terms of service, well Google only states that they will be compacted to one document like the new privacy policy.
All in all, it comes down to Google's attempt to make search and ads even more relevant to you the user. Director of Privacy, Product and Engineering writes:
"We can make search better-figuring out what you really mean when you type in Apple, Jaguar or Pink. We can provide more relevant ads too. For example, it's January, but maybe you're not a gym person, so fitness ads aren't that useful to you. We can provide reminders that you're going to be late for a meeting based on your location, your calendar and an understanding of what the traffic is like that day. Or ensure that our spelling suggestions, even for your friends' names, are accurate because you've typed them before."
