Green Technology: Power For The Future by Shawn Manaher
in Technology (submitted 2011-03-25)
For centuries, civilizations have relied on fossil fuel to power nations resulting in carbon being deposited into our atmosphere in an increasing pace. The growing population and the demand for energy resulted in the burning of more fossil fuel that releases loads of carbon creating a greenhouse effect that warms up the surface of the earth. This is commonly called global warming and it has adversely affected the earth’s atmosphere causing abnormal weather conditions. However, with the increasing demand for energy and the slowly depleting fossil fuels, more companies have considered sustainability and explored renewable energy sources to provide power for the population. In recent years, more green technology has been employed to enhance energy production and consumption.
The advent of sustainable energy and green technology has allowed for efficient supply and use of energy. Power has been harnessed from various natural sources such as geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, wave, tide and solar energy. They are efficient energy sources that release less or no carbon emissions. Damns have been built in powerful rivers to generate energy to more cities worldwide. Wind turbines have also been erected in plains and coastlines visited by strong winds which offers energy sustainability. In countries where there are geothermal vents, geothermal plants have been built to harness the energy produced by the steam released. Wave and tidal energy have also been used as a promising source for electricity generation. Although they are not largely used, modern innovations have been developed to make it more efficient and less costly to operate.
Probably the most common and readily available is solar power technology. While they have been used for decades in large-scale operations, with modern innovations in green technology, they have found their practical uses in commercial establishments, homes, and even in concept automobiles and small gadgets. Small solar panels have been manufactured to provide power to low energy-consuming devices for household uses. These renewable energy sources have produced clean and efficient power for today’s generation and can provide sustainability for the future.
