A healthy person looses about 100 hairs per day, and new hair grows and takes over. This is normal and there is nothing to worry about. However, if a person suffers from more hair loss which comes in a particular spot, it is termed alopecia and this happens due to serious malfunction of the hair follicles. This can seriously impact the confidence level of the person who is facing this problem both physiologically and psychologically. Both men and women suffer from alopecia.

Alopecia can come in two forms, scarring and no scarring. The reasons for scarring are many; heredity plays a major role and so do bacterial infections or fungal ones of the hair follicle. It could be some kind of trauma like burns, exposure to radiation, herpes, syphilis etc. No scarring alopecia occurs due to genetics, autoimmune disease, stress, crash diets or nutritional deficiencies, illness like malaria, typhoid or even due to medicines like anti cancer and anti thyroid drugs.

Alopecia can be diagnosed by testing the hair sample, the results of which will tell what the cause of the alopecia is. If it is due to bacterial and fungal infections or even lice infestation, treatment is simple and should start immediately. In case the person is suffering from alopecia areata (occurring in patches or circumscribed areas), then the person has to undergo prolonged treatment and also be given vitamin and zinc supplements to arrest baldness. The person can also consider surgical methods like hair transplantation.

Patients who have alopecia must get their hair and scalp treated, use quality shampoo and supplement their diet with zinc and iron. The patient should take at least eight glasses of water a day and keep away from tension. Stress aggravates the condition. Physical trauma of the affected area must be avoided at all costs. The person should only use soft brushes and never use chemicals and bleaches on the hair. Certain hair treatments like permanents, coloring etc should not be done at all costs.

Hair Loss is something that impacts the self image. If the person is unable to face the loss of hair the person can consider getting hair surgically transplanted in the affected area. Normally hair loss occurs at the top of the head, the hair at the back of the head is not affected by alopecia. If the person is suffering from this type of baldness which is known as male pattern baldness, then he can consult the hair specialist. The specialist will take up the hair from the back of the scalp and distribute it all over the affected area. The method is excellent and the hair growth appears natural and does not look as though the person has undergone hair transplant. The person has a full head of hair and the confidence of the person is restored.
