The Site Management Safety Training Scheme is part of the Construction Skills (CITB) Site Safety Plus range of courses which are highly regarded inside the construction industry and accepted as being the highest standard of qualification for SMSTS Training.

Training is delivered over five days. It is targeted at site managers, agents and other professionals with the responsibility of the planning, monitoring and organisation of groups of employees within the workforce. Training is suited to those who wish to develop their approach and knowledge in relation to the legal, moral and social side of their position. Fundamental skills are established in handling on site health and safety issues, in accordance with up to date regulations.

The site management safety training scheme health and safety course is attended by about 10,000 individuals yearly. Candidates attending SMSTS training include those currently employed as site managers who wish to update their awareness and knowledge of health and safety, along with other professionals within the construction industry who aspire to the role of site manager. Construction workers need to be capable in their knowledge of health and safety. The Construction Design and Management Regulations 2007 (CDM) place the obligation on employers to see to it that this is the case. For those seeking to satisfy this requirement, the five day SMSTS Course provides the highest level of training available.

Training thoroughly examines a selection of health and safety issues. This makes sure that after training, delegates will be fully competent in their ability to:

* Apply all health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them during their work

* Explain their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment

* Manage health & safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions, and within the context of their management or supervisory role

* Gain understanding of their responsibility and accountability for others welfare and health and safety on site

* Acknowledge that a safe site is efficient, economical and productive

To qualify for the Construction Skills Site Safety Plus SMSTS accreditation, course candidates will be assessed through three core exercises and are required to sit an end of course examination. On successful completion of the course, a certificate is issued by Construction Skills. Certificates remain valid for 5 years.

This course should not be confused with the Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course which is a 2 day training course aimed at site supervisors.
