This article discusses the importance of glutathione foods. Glutathione (GSH) is an important antioxidant produced in the body and which is used by each and every cell to rid itself of harmful materials like free radicals and toxins. The glutathione antioxidant is made up of three amino acids, namely cysteine, gamma glutamic acid and glycine.

Actions of Glutathione

Glutathione also helps the body repair cellular damage caused by pollution, stress and fatigue. White blood cells, especially T-cells, which are responsible for healthy immune system, need glutathione to multiply and remain at optimal level in the blood. This wonder chemical is used by the medical fraternity along with other tools to fight diseases like Diabetes and Alzheimer's diseases, heart problems, cancer, and AIDS, to name a few.

It is well known that glutathione is a powerful antioxidant and has the ability to detoxify cells in the body. These actions limit the damage to the cells by free radicals. It is not surprising that the highest levels of glutathione are found in your liver and in the lungs where toxins produced from unhealthy foods and the polluted air we breathe, respectively need to be constantly removed; similarly, relatively high levels are also found in the kidneys.

Effect of Inadequate Levels of Glutathione

While we know that our body can produce glutathione from nutrients that we consume, the problem arises when we cannot supply adequate nutrients to the body to synthesize it. The level of glutathione in the body has to be maintained for health reasons, but the scarcity of proper nutrients (due to unhealthy eating habits, pollution, etc.) and the effects of stress as well as aging cause reduced glutathionelevels of this antioxidant in the body.

Rich Glutathione Foods

It is necessary to consume foods that are high in nutrients that help the body produce enough glutathione. Exercises help the cells remain healthy and increase efficiency in utilizing glutathione to rid themselves of harmful materials. Additionally, glutathione supplements can also be taken.

Glutathione foods that are recommended include asparagus, spinach, broccoli, garlic, kale, onions, watercress, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Some spices, like cur cumin and cinnamon are known to boost glutathione levels. Other sources are watermelon, avocado, grapefruit, peaches, oranges, walnuts, granola, turkey and chicken meat, cottage cheese and yogurt.

Often, one needs to focus on foods that are rich in precursors of glutathione. Thus, it is also important to focus on foods rich in cysteine (e.g. eggs, garlic, onions, etc.), alpha lipoic acid (spinach, broccoli, peas, brussel sprouts and rice bran), or selenium (Brazil nuts, walnuts, sea foods, etc.)

Glutathione Foods and Supplements

It is important to remember that heating denatures proteins, hence consume more of those foods that can be taken raw, or, at least in conditions that are as close to their natural state as possible, e.g. indentured whey protein.

To ensure that the body is kept free of poisons and toxic substances, think of glutathione foods. Where necessary, consider taking glutathione supplements too. This will also defy aging process.
