Everyone wants high page rank backlinks but not everyone knows how to go about obtaining these elusive critters. Quality versus quantity is certainly a valid debate, but since backlinking isn't a zero sum game (you don't have to make a choice), why not do both?. Time to become a search engine sniper…

Some blogs are auto approve, which means the webmaster does not have to verify your comment before it goes live. Others are moderated, in which case you need to put a bit more effort and hope a) the admin is still active on the site b) it gets accepted c) your link isn't edited out.

The best way to check these 3 criteria is by viewing recent comments. If you see recent comments you know the blog is active. If you see spam comments you know the moderator doesn't care. If you notice only legit comments, then you have to leave a better comment yourself.

Now leaving your actual comment can be pretty straight forward. Read the blog post and make a comment; leaving your backlink is executed in one of two ways (three but let's run through first 2). Your "name" field can usually be known as the anchor text backlink. This should be a keyword when possible. This is usually accompanied by a "website" field. If this method isn't available, the best thing next is to leave the link directly within the comment itself. Try to get a sense if HTML or plain hyperlink text is allowed. Here is where you can get creative and add a "pseudo signature"

This helps make it look more legit, but you'd want to make sure your comment isn't as generic as the example one posted.
Now, if a blog is heavily moderated, but you really want a link on that post, time to resort to guerilla warfare. Usually smiley faces, or even a period, or a single letter can the anchor text to your backlink. They will most likely get approved while your smiley face secretly contains a link back to your website.

Once you find a site that does allow backlinks, link up, and then take note of other link builders from that page. This way you can keep the reverse engineer party going. It's a never ending cycle once you get the first one.
Some sites require registration, such as forums and most image sites, but others require simple fields to be filled out (as discussed earlier).

These approaches are great for finding "free" high pagerank sites to post your links on, but they aren't as permanent as you would think. These sites tend to get taken down, modified, and moderated in the long run. When you get hundreds to thousands of backlinks it's also important to make sure Google finds them, otherwise they are pointless.
