Hydroponics is a great way to use limited space in your home to grow the fruits, vegetables and plants you want. Unlike traditional gardening hydroponics allow you to grow plants with no soil. You can even make the system you want indoors and simply use artificial sources of light. So how to build a hydroponics system?
Step #1: Decide the amount of plants you want to grow first:
In order to provide good lighting to each plant you need to space them properly. So before making the system you need to decide the amount of plants you will grow in the system so that you can choose a container with suitable size.
Step #2: Use a container as a reservoir:
You need a container to use as a reservoir in your hydroponics system. You can start with something you already have like a fish tank or something like that. To prevent the growth of algae in the reservoir you should paint it with black paint to prevent light which help algae to grow.
Step #3: Use a floater or a Styrofoam:
Styrofoam is used to indicate the amount of water in the container. Measure the container with a tape measure from end to end then cut the Styrofoam about • inch smaller. This will give the Styrofoam space to adjust to the level of water in the reservoir.
In case you don't have a Styrofoam you can scratch a line vertically in the black paint of the reservoir so you can see the level of the solution in it.
Step #4: Use net pots:
You are going to need something to support the plants in your hydroponics system and at the same time allow the roots of the plants to grow in the solution, and here comes the role of the net pots. You can buy the net pots of the size you want or just find some small containers in your house and make some holes in the bottom of each one and use them as the readymade net pots.
Step #5: Use a strong pump:
This step may require asking a professional to recommend you the proper pump, give him the size of the container you are using in the system and ask him to recommend you the right pump which is strong enough to provide oxygen to the plants.
Step #6: Attach an airline to the pump:
In order to deliver oxygen to the roots of the plants you need an airline to be attached to the pump. Attach an air stone to the other end of the airline to make sure it will reach the bottom of the container and deliver air bubbles to the roots.
Step #7: Lighting:
Last but not least, if you want to build your system indoors you are going to need proper lighting. You may need to change the type of artificial lighting you are using according to the stage of growth of the plants, but as a start you can use fluorescent lighting.
These are the 7 basic things you are going to need in order to make a hydroponics system. Now you can go a try doing it for yourself, but why not save your time and money and just follow someone who already did it?
