How to Hire a Roofing Contractor by Jason
in Home / Home Repair (submitted 2012-01-26)
My friend had her roof done a few years ago and got totally scammed by her roofing contractor. She did all her research. She checked the BBB, Angies' List, she checked their license, they had been in business a really long time, and she still was left high and dry. They went out of business and left her with unpaid material bills from their supplier, and she had a lien filed on her house.
What a nightmare for someone to go through! She paid $22,000 for a new roof and then had to pay an additional $10,500 to satisfy the lien. Worse than that is she has not been able to sue the company and recoup any of her losses.
The icing on the cake is I just looked at this companys' record with the BBB and they are still rated an A+ even though they are out of business. They still don't have any complaints filed against their license, and I could not find one single complaint about them on-line.
This intrigued me so I asked my friend for the name of the supplier that had filed the lien on her home and went to visit them. They had informed me that in fact that company had left not less than 11 homeowners with unpaid bills, but would not discuss the specifics with me.
I wondered how this could be? How did they do this to so many people and still have a good reputation in the area and with the state licensing bureau. The answer is simple.
People just do not do their due diligence to report these things. It is either to time consuming or they just don't want to make the effort to punish the company who wronged them.
What you really need to do if you are hiring a roofing contractor is visit the office of the company, talk to their suppliers, talk to their employees, it is a lot. Who has time to do that with 3 or 4 roofing companies.
