Keys to Successful Political Campaigns   by April

As each day or week goes by, do you find yourself talking and complaining more and more about your local politicians and all the things they are failing to accomplish? Well, if you have some good ideas for solutions and are able to effectively communicate these ideas to your friends, family, and coworkers, you should seriously consider running for a political office of some kind, when one becomes available. Although making laws to affect change in your community is likely your focus, without a well-executed political campaign, very few, if any, of your ideas and solutions will turn into actual change. Even with the great complexities of the political process, you can run a serious campaign with as little as common sense, a great attitude, and a lot of creativity.

Most of us are familiar with the television advertisements and debates of national and state-wide election campaigns, but local campaigns do not really need such elaborate productions. Establishing a visible presence within your community is crucial, making your appearance at school functions, church events, county fairs, and other local events pretty much mandatory. When you do things like visit your neighbors, door by door, or make personal phone calls, you reinforce the idea that you are a part of the community, that you are experiencing some of the same situations and share many of the same values as them. Through close and consistent interaction and communication, people will begin to feel you are trustworthy and accountable, more like a neighbor rather than politician.

Connecting with people through mailed fliers and brochures, or linking with them through online social media, are also effective measures that may help you get elected. You have to do as much as you can to keep your name in people's minds and make your ideas and proposed solutions become part of the public conversation. Social media outlets are valuable, since many people do not read noncritical paper mail; on the other hand, many people, if they have the internet at all, are not real familiar with social media interactions. In order for people to support your positions and spread the word about your election campaign, it is fundamental that they at least know your name and what your positions are on key issues.

Another thing to take into consideration is the importance that money and fundraising plays in all elections, regardless of how much you rely on grassroots efforts. You must realize that every aspect of your campaign will require money at some point, whether it is direct, like for transportation and lodging, or indirect, like food for volunteers. Along with effective fundraising strategies, you will also benefit from having a finances manager, to ensure that your money is protected and well spent.

As long as you have a relevant and resonant message and platform, and as long as you are engaging and appealing with your audiences and constituents, people will want to support your campaign and what you stand for by donating however much money as they can afford, in addition to their vote.
