What percentage of the gifts you've received over your lifetime are still bringing you rewards? How many gifts did you receive that you cannot even recall? How many gifts do you find when you look through your boxes in storage? If you're like most individuals among the peoples of the West, you've received more gifts that were only briefly beneficial, if at all beneficial, than you've received and are enjoying to this day. So why go out and buy more of those same types of gifts for others during traditional gift giving occasions?

If you were to give those gifts to charity instead, you could rest assured that causes important to you would be served. Or, alternatively, you could ask that everyone giving you gifts this year make those gifts donations to charity in your honor this year.

One of the great truths often repeated in the West is that there is more reward in giving than in receiving. That all depends on the situation. For example, when you give to an important charity that helps feed those who are starving, the people receiving your gift get the double reward of not just food but of knowing someone cares. So they may indeed receive the greater reward than you. But as someone who is not starving, you receive a greater reward giving to such a charity than you could get from any gift anyone gave to you.

So instead of spending endless hours this year thinking about what everybody you know wants, doesn't have, and wouldn't buy themselves, think about what causes matter to each person and make a donation to a charity representing those causes in honor of each person. Or, tell everyone what charity serves a cause you really care about and experience the gift of gifts being given to that charity in your honor.

Make your Christmas wish list and your birthday wish list out while thinking about which charities best serve the needs of the people who need the most. Make charity your unique gift idea this year by ensuring that these people will receive what they need to keep going. Make sure the seasons that are special to you will be special to people all over the world. Though you may never know all of the lives you touch and they may never know you touched their lives, if you choose your charities wisely you can be sure that your unique gift idea this year will benefit all recipients, honorees, and donors.
