Marsa Matruh is a resort that is 150 miles away from Alexandria and used by Europeans and Egyptians alike as a great place to get away from the intense heat of summer. Visitors here will normally be looking at a holiday that will allow them to relax although it is possible to enjoy the sea and surrounding areas.

History

It was originally called Amuni and Marsa Matruh started out as a fishing village. The Romans turned it into a trade center. The British Army's Baggush Box was nearby during WWII and it was the end stop of a train running through El Alemein.

Facts

  • June, July and August are the hottest months when temperatures soar into the 40s

  • The markets are a great source of desert herbs and herbal medicines.

  • To see more of Egypt there is a sleeper that goes from Cairo to Marsa Matruh every night.

Places to Stay

Most of the new hotels are classed as 5 star and are all inclusive. The Jaz Crystal Resort is new and modern. It is ideally placed to walk around the places of interest - in fact all the hotels are. The Jaz Oriental Resort, receives many good reports.

Food and Drink

Most of the hotels will have restaurants and are often all inclusive so there is not a great deal of call for restaurants and cafes. That said there are a number of national franchises such as McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken opening up and alongside these there are Oriental restaurants that sell Chinese and Egyptian cuisine. Most of these will be very cheap so even if you are all inclusive it will not cost much to go somewhere else for a change.

Things to Do

There are plenty of sites to see and many of them are connected to the last war. The British Cemetery has thousands of gravestones and the German Cemetery is a memorial looking at the sea. The Italian Cemetery is a tower on a hill with marble covered walls. There is also Rommel's Hideout which is the cave where he organized the future conflict.

There is a ruined Temple dedicated to Rameses II and the Drown City of Caesar and Drown Palace of Cleopatra. There are good transport connections meaning that it is possible to visit many of the Temples in other parts of Egypt.
If you don't mind a bit of travel there are a number of beaches not far away. Ageebah Beach has many caves to explore while there are also the two beautiful sands at Al-Obayed Beach and Rommel Bay. If you want to go shopping there are plenty of places that sell perfume with a scent of the Orient.

Nightlife

It is possible to stay out until the early hours as some of the bars stay open late. Places are varied as the counter for both the local and foreign holiday makers. The best place for a late night will be in one of the hotels and there should not be a problem going there even if you are not a guest.
