Mercedes ML320 Window Switch Problems   by Chriss Grosso

The main Mercedes ML320 window switch seems to stop working a lot of the time and needs to ultimately be replaced.

This has been reported by owners of model years 98 through 01 the most. The problem usually begins to start when the person has issues raising the window.

At times the window hesitates, or gets stuck as it is raised. The problem will eventually get worse, even to the point of being not able to raise the window. In some cases, applying extra force to "help the window move up will help initially but eventually that will stop working as well and the owner will be forced to purchase a new window switch.

The cause for this is in the design of the switch; Mercedes mistakenly relied on the spring action of copper contacts. Because copper is weak, they tend to bend slightly each time they are used. Eventually, they will get out of reach for the plastic rocker that manipulates them. Some people try to manually repair the switches by bending the copper contacts back into position. This is usually a temporary solution but it can be helpful until you buy and install a new switch.

Here are some basic steps to repair your switch (Please Note: The easiest thing to do is buy a new one and replace the whole assembly)

Remove the Console Wood Panel

Remove the rubber liner from the cubby

Remove the gearshift knob

Remove the felt cubby underneath the

Remove the Wiring Harnesses

Remove one connector from the cigarette lighter

Lift the panel over the gearshift and remove it from the vehicle
Remove and Open the Switch Assembly

Remove the switch assembly from the trim panel

Adjust the Contacts

Temporarily connect it to the wiring to test all the functions

Snap the wood panel back into the console

Reinstall the armrest cubby

Replace the plastic trim around the gearshift indicator and the shift knob
