Sprawling apartment complexes, mob running through local railways station, fully packed chawl housing units, glitzy world of showbiz and not to forget, and the efficient men with mission – the dabbawalas; these are some of the images that voice out in one’s mind while one thinks about India’s bustling metropolitan city – Mumbai. Daily life in the fascinating city is fast paced and unpredictable. This beach city accommodates more than 20 million people, out of which migrants from the majority. Space is a precious commodity in such a scenario.
A whole array of residential arrangements such as group housing, individual row houses, flats, luxury villas, apartments, condos, beach houses are available in Mumbai. But, for the working middle class people, daily life is played out in chawls or small sized apartments. A chawl can said to be a multi tenements residential arrangement with small rooms that usually accommodate whole family with a shared bathroom for each floor. An entire family along with grandparents and sometimes guests residing in congested one room chawl is a common site. One can think that living in such an environment would be very restrictive but it’s surprisingly the opposite as people get used to lack of space! Such kind of living has its own merits of social support and sense of camaraderie among chawl residents. There is a substantial demand of residential space in Mumbai, however an affordable dwelling and peaceful environment is a rare luxury which only few people get to enjoy.
In a similar manner, another Indian megacity, Gurgaon is growing at a tremendous pace right from relaxation in FDI policies by govt. in the early 1990’s. Due to rise in space crunch, apartment culture(apartments or flats in Gurgaon) or living small residential units(1BHk and 2BHk) is gaining grounds in the prosperous city. Heightened industrial activity, availability of sophisticated infrastructure and efficient means of transportation are some of the prime reasons of ever growing population(according to recent market surverys, 15% annual influx of migrants ). In such a scenario, real estate developers are focusing on constructing low budget housing for working class home buyers with basic living amenities. The price range of these 1/2 BHK apartments start from 20 lakhs. The property or real estate market has experienced boom over the years in Gurgaon, however the flourishing city is still in nascent stage.
To conclude, the flourishing city is in its nascent stage of development into socio-economically strong centre but one can get a slice of Mumbai’s life style in small 1/2BHk apartments or flats in Gurgaon too.
