Outdoor Survival Gear For Urban Use by Josh Stevens

If you live in an urban setting, what kind of outdoor survival gear can you put together that will help you in an emergency situation? When you start to put a kit together, the first things you should consider are safety items. Do you live or work in a very large city with mostly high rise buildings or are you in a much smaller environment. Where you live and the environment around you can dictate what you should carry.
If you are in a city that is in an earthquake zone, put together a set of tools that may help you get out of a collapsed building or help others escape. Have some safety glasses you could put on and a dust mask to wear to avoid breathing it all the dust. Get yourself a small pry bar for prying debris out of the way and maybe a good pair of linesman pliers that could cut fence so you won't have to go around it to get away. Think of other items you could use based on your most likely scenario.
On a general note, if you are trying to make your way through a city and the utilities are shut down and you need water what can you do? First thing is have some water as part of your survival gear. There's sure to be ponds or lakes around maybe in a city park, or there could be puddles of water from rain. If you had a water filter your problem could be solved. There are small filters available you could carry with your kit or even get one of those straw type water filters. Also check into water purification tablets which are very effective.
You should also look into getting one of those tools that's actually called a key that you can use to turn on water at outside faucets that don't have a handle on them. You can get them at hardware stores and this would enable you to get water from commercial buildings. Aside from safety considerations, you should absolutely make sure you will have drinking water taken care of.
