Opening technique in the past the salt mines
Before opening a new salt mines in Transylvania and Maramures[4], There is usually drilling. If up to a depth of 36 m (18 fathoms Klafter = 18) does not intercept the salt, abandoning the project because of excessive depth of wells. Ideal was that the soil has a thickness of max. 10-12 m (5-6 fathoms).
A positive outcome of the first drilling a second run at a distance of 6 m (3 fathoms) the first, to determine the exact thickness of the coating layer over the second pit. The second well is placed at the same preferential rate with the first or max. 4-6 m (2-3 fathoms) level difference from the first well. A pit was reserved for the entry and exit mines mining (using hemp rope) and the other for extracting salt from underground wells. Wells are dug with quadratic profile, with each side 2.8 m (9 steps, 1 step = 0.3 m) to a depth of 4 m (2 fathoms) under sterile contact-salt, then gradually enlarged over the next 4 m (2 fathoms), all quadratic profile.
Here was the so-called "foundation" of the wooden beams embedded in salt, which is all well supported. Then the gun pit, bottom up, beginning with a mixture of clay, chaff and sheep's wool (for waterproofing walls), after which the beams (beams) of wood. Reinforcement thickness was 0.3 m (one step), so the actual profile of the shaft is reduced from 2.8 x final 2.8 m to 2.5 x 2.5 m. In the sterile-salt bottom walls are lined with buff, which contravenes the direct contact of water with salt walls. Water dripping down the mine was still captured and removed from the surface. From the "fundamental" to dig down more extended profile, tapered, so that after the other about 8 m (4 fathoms) the two adjacent wells united. From here, take a cone-shaped hand-ogive section as circular as possible (not done in practice only rarely). Mine is ready for operation only after a government agent of mine, sitting on a lump of salt in the middle Ocnei, could not reach the ceiling Ocnei hammer. From now on, pay lower salt cutter from 4.5 kreutzers (4.5 Kreuzer) for each block of salt, the usual rate of 1.5 kreutzers. Mine was then officially given up, also received a name. Costs of opening of a salt mines usually amounted to more than 5,000 florins (guilders) of silver.
