Search Engine Optimisation has lots of do's and don'ts. Below are some of the basics which are essential for google to start taking your website seriously!
Your Actual website optimisation: (plus Domains and URLs)
1. Relevant Title tag including main keywords but without stop words (like and, or etc.)
2. Meta keywords plus try to calculate the correct keyword weight. When it comes to adding all meta tags, make sure you add different titles, keywords and descriptions for each page of your site, and not just one copy copied on all your pages!
3. Add the other Meta tags - image alt tags (with keywords) plus attributes and size of images.
4. Add a sitemap to your site and include all the links within your website.
5. The main Keywords must be in the text content, especially on your landing/home page plus bold the main keywords too.
6. Your Domain name should ideally contain your keywords, and if not, make sure you rename some of the URLs within your pages with the actual keywords, especially matching the content of that page.
Link building:
7. Linking in general should ideally come from the Home page of such websites, or if it is not possible, make sure that there are actual links that lead to that page where your link is! Linking should ideally come from anchor text (your keywords) and not just simply your url! It is also very important that the websites that link to you (apart from general directories), that are industry related. A fishing website having a real estate link on the other side of the world would not have much impact, as the keywords on their page would be UNRELATED and Google won't put much weight to such links!
8. This must be gradual - daily or weekly, to look more organic and not add 1000 links in the first week of operation! Reciprocal linking is good, but too many may be looked at negatively. Only reciprocal linking doesn't work.
9. One way links are considered as the best links, and although most directories / linking sites would charge for them, they are worth the investment especially the ones with guaranteed inclusion, saving you time to stay checking if they actually gave the link or not! The higher the page rank of the originating website, the more weight they have for google! Directory submissions are also very important especially as mentioned previously, if such directories have a high PR. DMOZ, Yahoo, Business.com all have a PR of 8+ and even though they're very expensive, dmoz is free! Google ranks websites that are linked from quality sources like these!
Articles / blogs
10. Articles, blogs and splash sites are also very good especially if they contain a lot of keywords, and link to your site from such anchor text if possible! Try to submit different articles to different article related websites. Make sure though, that the articles/blogs you write are genuine as you may risk that either they are not included on the article/blog site, or recieve poor ratings/visits. Google's spider's are smart enough to understand this too!
To conclude, here's a tip of how to add quality comments on other people's blogs that have good weight for google!
Say you have a real estate website to do SEO for. Go in google and enter the following:
A. Enter in google: "property" "powered by wordpress" "leave a comment" - "no comments"
B. Check the Page Rank (PR) of this website from your toolbar
B. Click control U (page source code)
C. Search "nofollow"
D. choose only the ones without nofollow in source code...
E. Add a genuine comment + get link from high pr blogs.
