The Dos and Don’ts of Car Insurance Claims by Mark

Accidents happen, and that is why, as drivers, we need car insurance. Even for the most vigilant, careful driver, an accident is possible. So, as with many things, it is best to be prepared for the situation should it arise.
The Dos
Make sure you know your car insurance coverage and you are familiar with your policy and protection. When an accident does occur, don't wait! Call your insurance company to report it and initiate your claim immediately. This helps in reporting it accurately because it is still fresh in your mind. At the scene of the accident, get a case number for your claim from the claims adjuster you speak to, and maintain contact with that person. Lastly, make sure to complete and forms the insurance company asks of you, and keeps records of every document and conversation regarding the accident.
The Don'ts
The most basic advice to take is be honest. Do not change or enhance your version of the accident in an effort to inflate. This is fraud, and it can get you in serious legal trouble. It is important to take initiative, so do not sit back and assume the claim will be taken care of. Keep in touch with your claims adjuster until your claim is settled properly. Also important, do not avoid filing a claim out of fear of losing your cheap car insurance. Your rates depend on many factors, and many companies offer accident forgiveness and discounts for drivers whose records are otherwise clean.
An accident can be a scary thing, but knowing what to expect and the steps that should follow make the ordeal a whole lot more bearable. It will also make the results better, for a properly filed claim will get you the service you are paying for from your insurance company.
