Starting a career or looking for a new place to continue an existing one is a sometimes difficult task. With an unemployment rate of 10 to 12 percent over the last few years, Florida has not typically been seen as a fertile ground for jobs. Surprisingly, some fields are actually experiencing large rates of growth in the sunshine state, though.

So what are the fields of highest growth for careers in Florida? One of the areas showing a large growth rate is the information technology sector. With the expansion of computers and computer systems into nearly every area of everyday life, it is little wonder that information technology jobs are expanding in number.

Software engineers and computer support specialists are two of the career paths that are currently showing the greatest numbers of available positions. Software engineers are responsible for designing and creating programs for computer users. They may work for a software company that distributes programs to the general public through retail stores or direct to the consumer online. There is also a market for software engineers within other types of corporations. These organizations often need specialized programs to achieve their business goals, and hiring an in-house software engineer is more cost-effective than paying to license third-party software or contracting a freelance engineer to design each needed program.

In order to excel in the information technology field, workers should have advanced knowledge of computers and their inner workings. Many who are seeking the fast track to upper-level positions within a company's information technology department choose to earn an MBA with a concentration in computer technology. Others choose to pursue a Bachelor's degree in a field such as information or computer science to increase their odds of employment and advancement. Regardless of education, most professionals in the information technology field have a long history of working with and around computers.

Another field experiencing rapid growth in jobs in the state of Florida is the arena of health care. One of the main reasons for this is that the average age of Floridians is higher than the residents of most other states. Many older citizens choose to live in Florida during their old age due to the milder climate and warmer winters. Along with aging, though, comes increased susceptibility to illness and injury. As the population continues to grow in age, the need for professionals to care for them also continues to grow at an exponential rate.

Treating the symptoms and causes of illness and injury, physical therapists are one of the types of professionals in highest demand. The growth in this area is expected to continue to grow as the population continues to grow in age. Physical therapists work with each patient as an individual, composing a specific plan of treatment according to the nature of the injury or illness and the associated symptoms.

Registered nurses are also in high demand in the state of Florida. Again, this is largely due to the average age of Floridians and the health concerns that come along with aging. Registered nurses work closely with doctors and teams of other nurses to assist in assessing the health of patients and developing and implementing plans for treatment.
