Every smoker knows that there is nothing as dangerous as smoking. Every smoker also knows that he or she has no one to blame for his addiction. The smoker is effectively poisoning himself to death. And deep down, even as the smoker lights up another cigarette, he wants to quit. But it is hard. As anyone who has tried to diet or even cut back on alcohol knows, denying yourself something is hard. The same is true with smoking.

However if you set your mind to do it with all sincerity, you can quit smoking. People have done it with success and you can do it too. It is extremely difficult, you are not giving up your chocolate here, you are giving up an addiction that has taken over your life. As a smoker you are addicted not only to the nicotine of the cigarette, you are addicted to the ritual of smoking. Nicotine acts on your brain and encourages it to release dopamine which makes you feel relaxed and good. To help get rid of this addiction experts say that you can need to first start using a substitute like a nicotine patch or gum. Along with the substitute, you also need to work on your will power. It is easy to slide back into your routine.

Now let us talk about your routine. You may reach out for a cigarette to calm yourself when you are battling stress. Alternatively you may be seeking a sense of security from your cigarette or using it to socialize with your colleagues at work. You may be smoking like a chimney when you drink. All these social situations or emotional situations are triggers. Every time you are faced with these situations you may want to light up. To effectively break your addiction, try to avoid these situations until the habit has diminished. Or you must consciously not reach for a cigarette when you are in any of your trigger situations. Go to a bar, drink but do not smoke. Hang around the coffee machine at work with your team mates but do not smoke. Your goal is to quit so make yourself stronger this way.

Remember that there is a reward that awaits you when you break free of this addiction. You will save a whole lot of money, you will have more energy and look better and you will have a lot of time. So every time you get tempted to put your money in the vending machine to buy another pack, remember that this money could be used better. Fix a goal of what you will do with the money you spend on the cigarettes. Would you like to buy yourself a snazzy pair of shoes with that money? Are you planning on overhauling your car? These will become goals, tangible ones. Put the money aside in an envelope and use it at the end of a month to get you what you want.

Keep yourself active, join a dance class or take up a sport so that you do not slide back into your addiction just because you are bored. Drink lots of water. This helps your body to detoxify faster. You will find as the days go by, that you are getting stronger and more able to remain smoke free.
