Town planning is an art form, and a crucial during the construction of of a new town It used to be that towns would basically spring up on their own. Now however, a thorough structure has to be in place to prevent future issues. Proper planning will ensure for the most efficient use for a town's land and resources.

Town planning is basically a system that can balance the needs of new development with the space and resources available. Urban planners will have to devise a strategy to best incorporate needs for roads, water, sewage, commercial space, and others. In simple terms, town planning can be separated into two parts; land use management and strategy. In a broad sense, strategic planning refers to the future, a year or two or more down the line. Things like zoning, infrastructure, and other logistical aspects are addressed with land use management.

Obviously, the selecting of a site will be very important. This process starts with surveying the land. This should evaluate the most appropriate areas for residential development. The environmental conditions, the proximity to nearby major cities, and distance to connecting highways are all important considerations.

With a well-thought structure, a town will use its allotted land more efficiently. Busy people in today's world can't be expected to tolerate a lot of time spent traveling around for mundane tasks. Proper design and planning will include hospitals, stores, parks and schools all within a reasonable distance from people's homes.

Urban planning experts will undertake the designing. It's a process that's both artful and scientific, and will involve surveyors, engineers, and architects. There are water facilities, roads, drainage systems and power grids to build. Planners must be mindful of a natural occurrences or natural disasters. It's up to the architects and planners to see that the land is used in the most efficient manner possible.

If planning is not done, the necessary allotment of water, power, and other resources might not be in place for housing developments. A vital community center like a hospital might not be built at the best possible location.

A town can't prosper without satisfying the expectations of its inhabitants. The role of town planners is to meet take the steps necessary to meet the needs of its residents.
