If you are a regular Picasso or Michelangelo, you can get money for school through weird scholarships. You do not have to be a jock or a brain to qualify for these scholarships. Students with artistic skill and flair should get their portfolios ready and apply for these art scholarships.
Random House and Dr. Seuss Publishing sponsor a generous annual art scholarship that has been around for a few years now. Based on the Dr. Seuss book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go," this contest requires applicants to design an original piece of art, no larger than 16 x 20, that draws inspiration from the book. High school seniors can send in paintings, drawings, mixed media, gouaches, etchings or silk screens, but no copies or digitally created art. This weird scholarship is worth your while - a $10,000 award is at stake.
Artists are known for their eclectic nature and their tendency to be introverted. With art programs getting cut from schools, it is more important than ever to bring art to the community. The WorldStudio AIGA Art Scholarship is an art scholarship for those students who major in Fine Arts and enter a portfolio showing samples of their work. This scholarship awards amounts of $500 up to $5000 to several lucky winners. Preference for this award will go to minority or economically disadvantaged students. Applicants must demonstrate how they are giving back in their communities. Competition is fierce for this award. The committee reviews about 500 applications and portfolios each year, and hands out only about 15 awards.
Do you like to construct space art? Yes, you heard me correctly. I said space art. $1000 is available to the person who designs the best two-dimensional space art. A panel of self-described space artists take time to judge and display artwork from every finalist. This scholarship is from the Society of Performers, Artists, Athletes, and Celebrities for Space Exploration, or SPAACSE. The SPAACSE Liliane Webb Art Scholarship was formed to honor the wife of one of the former board members of the organization. If you are an artsy high school senior with an eye for space design, then this scholarship is for you.
You do not have to leave college as a "starving artist" if you take the time to apply for some of these weird art scholarships. Get your portfolio ready and start applying. There is a lot of weird art scholarship money available to you!
