Most of you probably have heard of the term "man boobs" or "man breasts", but perhaps not the term "gynecomastia" - which is the scientific term which basically refers to the same condition. It is the development of breasts in men. Gynecomastia itself is not harmful to your health, however it can really hurt your self-confidence - and you wouldn't be the first male who avoids wearing tight shirts or hates going shirtless on the beach because of their condition.
The most common cause of gynecomastia is an hormonal imbalance, which usually starts during puberty. The growth of breast tissue usually stops after puberty. But in a group of men this growth continues resulting in what we call "man boobs". Another cause of breast development in men is fat build-up in the chest area. The latter cause is easier to deal with and usually won't require any type of surgery. Some types of drugs have also been linked with gynecomastia, however, research has not been conclusive. Steroids can cause abnormal growth in your chest tissue which could lead to a condition similar to gynecomastia.
Hormonal changes outside of puberty are also a possible cause of gynecomastia. Sadly not much research has been done on this cause and it is hard to detect. If you suffer from other conditions this could be linked to an hormonal imbalance.
If you have man boobs and you are overweight then there are certain things you can do to decrease the size of your man boobs. Cardiovascular exercises are an excellent way to burn calories, which in turn burns fat from your body. Weight loss in general should also cause fat to decrease in your chest area. Jogging is also a good way to burn fat. Make sure you exercise at least 4 times a week at 30 minutes per session.
For those of you who are affected by the real form of gynecomastia, surgery may be an option. Please see your doctor for initial advice, he or she will forward you to a specialist.
