in Technology / GPS (submitted 2011-03-23)
Vehicle Tracking system is used to track the vehicle with the help of vehicle mounted unit fixed inside the vehicle .The mounted unit will have computer software installed in it, with which the owner or the one who operates can check the location of the vehicle, gathering the information from the site and provide it to base, through GPRS facility or any similar facility. In the recent age, either GPS (Global Positioning System) or GLONASS (Global Satellite navigation system) technology are used, where GLONASS is brought forward by Russian government.
The components of GPS based tracking include a device to track and a server along with the user interface to exhibit the information.
GPS server-The GPRS data will be transferred to the server and the server that is used to track has got dual responsibilities like accepting data from the ‘vehicle mounted unit’ fixed inside , storing it and also ready to serve the information when it is requested for.
GPS device –The ‘vehicle mounted unit’ device fixed catches the GPS location details along with the information at fixed intervals to a central server. Some of the information you can get from GSM module are altitude, the temperature, RPM of the engine, the quantity of fuel, whether the door is open or close, the pressure of tyre, status of the emergency buttons, the position of the valve, area code of GSM, number of nearby satellites which can be viewed, headlights and taillights turned on and many other information .The potential of these devices really decide the final ability of the whole tracking system.
Client side interface or User Interface-This will help to get the needed information, view the details of the information and draw out the significant details from it. Most functional is the one which is a web based application and where there is no need or usage of custom software. You can carry out the geo-fencing of the vehicle and you can get the reports generated and can also track the vehicle on electronic maps.
