Veins often become more noticeable as women and men age. Thanks to the latest technology, vein removal is a procedure that plastic surgeons can now offer. This provides quick, safe, and effective treatment for superficial spider veins and even bigger blue veins on the leg. It can be performed on any type, color, or tone of skin. Candidates should ideally be non-smokers who are healthy, physically and psychologically.

Veins from other areas of the body can also be removed. However, knotted varicose veins are not suitable for this procedure. The surgeon first assesses each individual patient and then decides on the best treatment. In the majority of cases, blue leg veins, spider, and facial veins respond very well. Spider veins occur frequently on the ankles, thighs, calves, and face. They not only look unsightly but they can produce discomfort like aching, burning, and swelling. These symptoms are often more prevalent at night and therefore they can cause disturbed sleep.

The laser delivers an intense light that coagulates the blood inside the veins. Eventually, they disintegrate and are absorbed into the body. Blood flow adjusts itself automatically to run through other veins that are deeper under the skin.

The number of sessions will be determined by the size, number, and color of the veins being removed. During the procedure, you will feel stinging when the laser pulses are being emitted. Painkillers or anesthesia are usually not required for spider veins, but a topical anesthesia is used to eradicate large leg veins.

After treatment, pain is minimal and, in some cases, non-existent. Bruising or redness may occur and, with larger veins, a brownish pigment may form on the skin. This will fade completely after a few months. The plastic surgeon usually instructs patients who have undergone treatment for leg veins to wear a supporting stocking for a period of time.

The surrounding skin may also swell but this should reduce after 24 hours. Blistering can occur in rare instances. The patient is able to resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. However, vigorous activities and strenuous exercise should be avoided for a couple of days. If going outdoors, a sunscreen should be applied to the treated area and direct exposure to the sun must be avoided until all redness, bruising or swelling has disappeared.

The results with this type of surgery are successful and patients are very happy. However, it will not prevent new veins from forming. In this case, further treatment will be required. In addition, not all imperfections can be removed from treated areas. People with keloid scars are not suitable for this procedure because the laser makes direct contact with the skin.
