The 59th National Hockey League All-Star Game, (also known as the 2012 Tim Hortons NHL All-Star Game) is scheduled for January 29, 2012 at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. This edition of the All-Star Game will feature the "fantasy draft" format first seen in the previous 2011 NHL All-Star Game.

This is the first time that Ottawa will have hosted the NHL All-Star Game. Ottawa has hosted two drafts, a Stanley Cup Final, and the World Junior Championships all in the past five years.

It will mark the 20th anniversary of the Ottawa Senators joining the NHL. It will be the second All-Star Game that Canada has hosted in the past three years, as the Montreal Canadiens hosted it in 2009.

A few hours after learning he would captain one of the sides in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, Daniel Alfredsson already knew who he'd take with his first selection: teammate Erik Karlsson.

Alfredsson told reporters in San Jose before the Senators' game against the Sharks that he'd pick the young defenseman (six goals, 44 assists) at the first opportunity. Karlsson, 21, leads blue liners in scoring in his third NHL season and is playing in his second All-Star Game.

Alfredsson's plan takes some drama out of the draft, which occurs on Jan. 26 in Ottawa, but there are still outstanding questions, particularly whether Zdeno Chara, the other captain, takes any Vancouver players; Chara's Bruins are in the middle of a fierce rivalry with the Canucks--the Bruins beat Vancouver in a seven-game Stanley Cup finals in June, and the teams played an entertaining, controversy-filled game earlier this month.

"I don't know if I should be smart and wait because I don't know if (Chara) is going to pick any Canuck players," Alfredsson told reporters.

Four Canucks--forwards Henrik Sedin, Daniel Sedin and Cody Hodgson and defenseman Alex Edler--are headed to the game. Hodgson is part of the 12-player rookie pool.

The rivalry took a particularly nasty turn after the Canucks' 4-3 win Jan. 7, when Boston forward Brad Marchand was given a game misconduct and suspended for clipping Canucks defenseman Sami Salo. The incident set off a round of public sniping between players, coaches, executives and media from Vancouver and Boston. It culminated when a member of Vancouver's staff reportedly tore Chara's photo off the cover of NHL media guides at the Florida Panthers' arena.

Either way, Chara isn't tipping his hand. He was asked Wednesday whether he'd make Maple Leafs winger--and former teammate--Phil Kessel the last pick for a second straight year. Kessel is tied for second in the NHL with 24 goals.

"I don't know. We'll see how it goes. Somebody has to go last," Chara told reporters with a smile on his face. "I don't know if they'll have a car for him or something else ... we'll see how it goes.

"I'm not going to do too much research, but I'm going to do the best job I can to build the best possible team."

In his 14th NHL season, Chara is making his sixth All-Star appearance. He captained Boston to a Stanley Cup last season.

Alfredsson, 39, is in his 16th NHL season, all with Ottawa. The right wing has been the Senators' captain since 1999-2000, the league's longest active streak, and is also making his sixth All-Star appearance.

It was a special moment for Faulk and his mother, Gail, to whom he credits his success.

"She's always been there for me, she's always [given] me the option to do whatever I wanted growing up, whatever sport, she never forced anything upon me," Faulk said of his mother. "She's always been there for me, driving me to hockey practices growing up so I think without her I wouldn't be here today."

But in Faulk's mind, there is more than enough credit to go around.

"It's a nice honor but I've got to attribute some of it to my teammates and the organization for giving me the opportunity to step in and make an impact right away," said Faulk, who through 32 games played with the Hurricanes has contributed 11 points (4-7-11).

"When I was leaving [UMD], that's one of the reasons I signed [with Carolina] because I was told I would have a chance to compete for a spot at camp and that's all I think you can really ask for," said Faulk. "You never really expect as a 19-year-old to be playing in the NHL. It's an amazing feeling. You can't ask for anything more and it's been a lot of fun so far."

Faulk, who led all Bulldogs defensemen in goals (8), assists (25) and points (33) in 39 games in his one and only season at UMD, said his transition to the NHL was made smoother by playing against the older, more physically mature competition offered by the NCAA over junior hockey.

After squeezing a stint with Team USA at the World Junior Championship into his collegiate season, Faulk signed with the Hurricanes shortly after the Frozen Four and was immediately assigned to Carolina's AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, for the duration of their postseason run.
