As you might already know, Champagne is a region near Reims, France, where the sparkling wine is been fermented. Here, a few centuries ago, Dom Perignon, the Benedictine monk, had an important role in the evolution of the sparkling wine. Now, Dom Perignon represents one of the most best-known brands of champagne and it became famous only between the two World Wars Moet and Chandon launched it on the market as a newborn vintage champagne. Moet was an early provider for the aristocrats. This brand supplied champagne for Queen Elizabeth II and Napoleon I.

Another important champagne house is Bollinger, popular for its Blanc de noirs vintage wine. The brand became famed after the campaign set by a lady named Lilly Bollinger. She traveled the world to make this champagne brand known everywhere.

Considered along with Dom Perignon and other famed houses as crown jewels, Krug is one of the best champagne houses in the world. It has a very distinctive savor because it’s a dry complete barrel fermentation wine.

If you want to know the most expensive champagne in the world, you should probably check the Piper-Heidsieck brand. Marilyn Monroe used to drink a glass every morning. The most expensive bottle was the Shipwrecked 1907 Heidsieck, and costed the impressive sum of $275,000.

The oldest champagne ever opened was a Perrier-Jouët (vintage 1825). They tasted and opened it two years ago, in 2009. This famous house produces a little over 3 million bottles per year. A similar number is produced by Louis Roederer,, which is another important champagne brand that makes mostly non-vintage champagne made of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Among other great brands from the region of Champagne are Taittinger, Duval Leroy, Pol Roger, Henriot, Gosset. Still, today champagne is made in other areas of the globe too, but they don't call it champagne because it's patented, and yet it’s the same method of making it.
