What is the best way to lose weight and keep it off? by Brian V. Menard
in Health / Weight Loss (submitted 2011-07-22)
Why is it that most diets seem to work for a little while but then the progress stops and the weight comes right back again (usually with a few extra pounds)? I had tried dozens of diets when I was younger and eventually, it appeared to become a lost cause.
Every diet I tried seemed to work for a few days and sometimes even a couple of weeks, but then the progress would suddenly stop. What's up with that? I was still following the plan, it simply stopped working! As my weight approached nearly 300 lbs., I was beginning to feel desperate and perhaps even depressed. Nothing was working. I desperately needed to find the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
As a result of this phenomenon, I decided to ignore everything I read about diets and instead, research the subject on my own using myself as the guinea pig. I began by making a list of the foods I typically consumed. This list included foods from the diets I had previously used as well because I knew there had to be some reason they helped me lose weight at first. I then proceeded to list all of the contents of each product and the nutritional information in side by side charts. The purpose of this was to determine if there were any particular patterns which would emerge when I checked all of these foods.
It didn't take very long before a pattern did indeed emerge. In fact, I never completed my list because a huge problem quickly became very obvious. The calories I was consuming were well within accepted guidelines and the protein was fine as well. Carbohydrates were lower than I would have expected and salt was very high. However, salt will not cause weight gain (except for water retention) as far as I knew so I didn't concern myself with that item. The content which immediately raised a huge "Red Flag" was fat! Using this new discovery, I proceeded to document my plan of action as I changed my style of eating.
While designing this new plan, it quickly became apparent that there was simply no way to reduce the level of fat in my diet to an acceptable level unless I resigned myself to Learning how to eat again. A lifetime of poor eating habits is not something that is easily changed. I needed to totally change my attitude toward eating. My initial goal was to lose only 10 lbs. The best way to keep it off would be a challenge for another day.
Once this decision was made, I made a list of foods which I enjoyed that were very low in fat content. I then proceeded to list all of my favorite foods. Needless to say, the two lists shared very little in common. Virtually all of my favorite foods were very high in fat. "This was going to take some work", I thought. But I was out of options. My weight was completely out of control. So off I went on my new journey and began to learn how to eat again.
It didn't take very long to reach my first goal of 10 lbs. This was completed in less than two weeks. As a result of this journey, I lost 85 lbs in only nine months. By the third month into my new eating style, my progress was amazing. At that point, I knew my weight issue was well on it's way to being under control forever. It appeared I had finally found the best way to lose weight and keep it off. My level of weight loss had become completely predictable and controllable. What a fantastic feeling! It was beginning to seem like I had truly found the best way to lose all of the weight I desired. But what surprised me even more was finding that this method was also proving to be the best way to keep the weight off. I'm certain this plan works to keep the weight off because this all took place over twenty years ago and I have managed to keep the extra pounds off to this day.
Please note; I realize there are many other factors which contribute to weight control as well. With some of these factors, such as exercise, being more important than others. However,it is in my sincere opinion that nothing affects a persons weight more than the fat content in their diet. If you properly regulate your daily fat intake (DFI), you will indeed lose as much weight as you desire. This plan is by far the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
